Beautiful Singles

I am always amazed at how many people fail to see the simple beauty of a single rose...many even sniff and declare "It doesn't even look like a rose!" I absolutely ADORE single roses and would not be without them...one of the greatest joys in life is quietly sitting beside a single rose in Spring time watching bees drunkenly revelling in pollen-drenched stamens.

The photos above are of one of my all-time favourite singles, David Austin's 'Wildflower'. I have several in the garden, and find myself continually looking for spots where I can possibly squeeze another. It grows into a fine healthy shrub, about 2 m high and about the same in width, and has a generous repeat flowering. The scent is fresh, and the buds are a gorgeous creamy apricot colour, despite opening lemony yellow and fading to creamy white.

This is one of David Austin's "oldies', having been released in 1986, and like many of his roses grows much bigger here in Australia than it does in its homeland...incredibly, in England it is described as being "a low shrub below 75 cm"!!! It would make an absolutely stunning hedge....hhhmmmmm.....note to self....
