Mutabilis

I think that every garden in country NSW has at least one example of this magnificent rose...it is an absolute gem in terms of its spectacular display and longevity of flowering. The buds are one colour; it opens another and then proceeds to change until the shrub is covered with blooms ranging in colour from crimson to pink to creamy white.

Mutabilis (pronounced "Mute-arb-illis", according to those 'in the know') is a China rose which grows to over two metres in height if left alone. I can most definitely defend the belief that this particular rose does not respond well to heavy pruning...my husband took to it with a very heavy hand over five years ago, and it is only now that it has began to stop sulking and flower anywhere near its former display.
